The Vasse-Wonnerup wetlands are internationally recognised for their rich biodiversity and importance for water bird breeding and habitat. The wetlands are currently under threat from excessive nutrients, particularly phosphorus and nitrogen which cause algal blooms, entering the system from the surrounding catchment.
This project was primarily focused on improving water quality in the Vasse Wonnerup wetland system though improved management of drains and waterways. The Rural Drainage and Waterways projects involved fencing and revegetation of drains and creeks, installing stock crossings, re-engineering drains for erosion control, nutrient stripping basins on drains and other best management practices.
