Western Dairy, GeoCatch and the Department of Agriculture formed a partnership to develop and implement best practice for natural resource management. DairyCatch is part of the dairy industry's commitment to strive towards healthy catchments.
The project initially targeted the priority issues of effluent and nutrient management and water use efficiency. Effluent management plans were the current focus activity. Plans were prepared by the DairyCatch engineer Tom Long in accordance with agreed best practice. The effluent plans assisted landholders to significantly reduce the quantity of nutrients and bacteria that drain from their property into local waterways and receiving water bodies.
DairyCatch provided funding support for dairy farmers to develop and implement best practice effluent plans up until June 2006, or earlier if funding is fully allocated.
Four 'Monitor Farms' were developed to measure costs and benefits of best practice.
