Cat Information

In accordance with The Cat Act 2011 all cats that have reached 6 months of age must be registered, microchipped and sterilised. 

Registration

The registered owner of a cat must be at least 18 years old. Cats may be registered for one year, three years or lifetime.  Lifetime registration of young cats is the most cost effective option.

Registrations expire the following 31 October.

Eligible pensioners are entitled to a 50% concession.

To pay your cat registration renewal, you can either call our Customer Service team on 08 9781 0444 or visit our team at the City of Busselton Administration Building, 2 Southern Drive, Busselton.

Responsible Cat Ownership

To protect wildlife and prevent your cat from being a neighbourhood nuisance, please make sure your cat:

• is confined to your property and kept inside at night
• is registered and microchip details are up to date

Maximum Number of Cats

The maximum number of cats allowed without a permit is two.

To apply for a permit to keep more than two cats submit an application form.

There is a $85 application fee.

Nuisance Cats

To discourage cats wandering on your property:

• use commercially available deterrents (available from pet shops and nurseries)
• feed your own pet indoors or remove uneaten food from outside
• speak to the cat’s owner

If this doesn’t work, call the City and a Ranger will visit the owner to confidentially discuss your concerns and their responsibilities.

Cat Traps 

The City has cat traps available for residents to trap cats on their property.

Trapped animals are to be treated humanely at all times.

To book a cat trap submit a cat trap application form.

A fully refundable $100 bond is payable when collecting the trap.

Impounded Cats

Rangers will only collect cats secured in a trap or other suitable container.

Trapped cats will be impounded. If the owner is identified they will be issued a seizure notice and will have seven working days to claim their cat. An impound fee of $198 is payable before the cat will be released.

After three days a $33 per day sustenance fee will also be charged.

Unregistered cats must be microchipped, sterilised and registered before being released to their owner.

If an owner is not identified details of an impounded cat will be published on the impounded animals webpage.

If not claimed within three working days unclaimed cats will be assessed by SAFE Busselton to see if they are suitable for rehoming.

Feral or diseased cats will be humanely euthanised  at a registered veterinary practice.
